JACKSON KAHN DESIGN

"Wayzata Country Club occupies terrain that is ideal for golf. The rise and fall in the landscape provides ample opportunity to craft a thoughtful and engaging course - and the intent of the proposed Master Plan is just that. The essence of great golf is diversity and distinction, while challenging the best players and maintaining an enjoyable experience for all. Our goal is to fashion a more strategic, aesthetic, and singular test of golf that will serve both the existing and future membership of WCC."

- Tim Jackson & David Kahn

WHY JACKSON KAHN DESIGN?
A sub committee of the Golf & Grounds Committee along with Jesse Trcka (Superintendent) and Max Addler (Director of Golf) invested a great deal of time over a period of six months vetting a group of well-respected architects that could develop a compelling and differentiating Master Plan containing options for improvements to our golf course.  The committee developed a short list of candidates who visited the Club, walked the golf course, and provided proposals for the Committee to review.

After a thorough review of the proposals the sub-committee unanimously agreed to recommend to the Full Golf Committee and Board to engage Jackson Kahn Design to develop a comprehensive Golf Course Master Plan.  The recommendation received unanimous approval from both governing bodies and we are excited to get the planning process underway. While we were very impressed with all of the architects we met with, Tim Jackson and David Kahn stood out not only because of their vision, body of work and overall philosophy, but also with their communication skills that will be key as they interact with our membership throughout the planning process.

BACKGROUND
Tim Jackson and David Kahn co-founded Jackson Kahn Design in 2009. Their educational backgrounds in Agronomy and Landscape Architecture, coupled with over $600,000,000 in completed project experience, and a direct hand in many award winning designs allows us to bring a confident ability to excel on projects both large and small. Having completed $100,000 remodels to $35,000,000 new constructions, and worked in nearly every type of varied environment and condition, Jackson Kahn has brought a wide range of projects from conception to completion.

JKD IN THEIR OWN WORDS
Our focus on the needs of the client drives our philosophy and directs our efforts. Our abilities in communicating design concepts coupled with our passion for refining and improving those ideas in the dirt has been the core of our success at JKD. In the ten years since our founding, we have been blessed, fortunate, and grateful to be a part of many extraordinary projects.

Having had the opportunity to work with Tom Fazio and the rest of the Fazio Design team for a combined 14 years has provided grounding in a sound and proven golf course design methodology. What we have taken from the multitude of experiences during that time is the basis of our design philosophy moving forward. The list of those priorities can be refined to three major points: Playability, Aesthetics, and Details

PLAYABILITY FOR ALL
The golf course must be playable for the majority of the membership on a daily basis. The goal to allow the maximum enjoyment of the design by the greatest possible number of members is something we feel is critical in measuring how successful we are on any given project. At the completion of a project, what we strive to achieve is for the better players to feel challenged by the strategic elements of the course, while the average member loves to play the course day in and day out.

AESTHETIC GOLF
The visual aspects of the golf course bunkering, landscape, water features, turf lines, etc., must all be maximized to enhance and add to the golf environment. No less critical than playability, the desire to create a visually stunning framework for each golf hole is very important to the success of the project as well. The style of the bunkers, the addition of native plant material, the creation of beautiful and believable water features, as well as the screening of cart paths and development where possible, all adds to the ultimate look of each individual hole and the project as a whole.

DETAILS MATTER
Details matter. Both in the design and construction of any potential project, success is predicated by getting all of the details right. We feel strongly in being very involved with the club and contractor with weekly visits once a project commences. As much as the plan work is an important step in the process for concepts, budgeting and permitting, the design can only be maximized by reacting and adjusting in the field. Allowing the design to evolve within the framework of the budget and schedule has been a key element in getting the details right, and maximizing the potential and success in our past experiences.
